History

Inspired by Swami Vivekananda's wonderful personality and soul-stirring teachings, especially his spirited call to the youth of India, a few devout souls headed by late Rama Varma Appan Thampuran founded an organization called the Vivekodayam Samajom in 1917. Eventually a primary school was founded to realize the mission of the Samajom. The swift-turning wheel of time bifurcated it into two high schools-one for boys and the other for girls. Great luminaries like Swami Chinmayananda, the founder of Chinmaya Mission and Swami Ranganathananda, the President of Ramakrishna Math have expressed their indebtedness to this school for shaping their destiny. It is ecstatic for us to see Mahatma Gandhi's words in the Visitor's Diary of this school.

MESSAGE
To impart knowledge is instruction, and the Institution where we get instruction is rightly called an Institute. To transform a personality into a nobler shape is the work of a teacher and teachings are imparted in schools. However, we will have to admit, our present day schools are a misnomer and they are at their best only mere institutions. Perhaps, this is the very reason why students of our schools and colleges in present times have no respect and reverence to the teacher, because we meet no 'teachers' in these institutes. In short, very few of our temples of learning are really schools and rare indeed are teachers among the innumerable staff. I had been a student of Vivekodayam Boys' High School, and from my own personal experience, I must admit that, if I have fulfilled my life and benefited by education and successfully transformed my personality, the early foundations were laid in the Geeta Classes that I attended in the School, and also due to the religious and spiritual atmosphere that was liberally available in this Gurukula Institution.I am glad to hear that Vivekodayam Samajom is celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of the School this year. I am sure, the Samajom will realise the sanctity of the old tradition that was inaugurated by great Headmasters like Tyageesananda, and maintain the same atmosphere.

The Higher Secondary Section
When the higher education in the state took the higher secondary route, we were awarded with two science batches and one humanities batch on August 24, 1998. The classes were begun with three highly competent promoted teachers and some guest lecturers. On September 1, 1998 a team of experienced and qualified teachers joined hands with the promoted lot to churn out one of the best higher secondary schools of the state. Thanks to the excellence gained within a short time, government further sanctioned two more science batches, one Commerce batch and one humanities batch.Many an eyebrow was raised when pre-degree got de-linked from colleges. Rumors went about that higher secondary sector could never cope with college education. But Vivekodayam School has been one of the pioneers to dispel all the doubts regarding this. It is uniquely gifted with a team of dedicated teachings staff whose immense experience and qualification in the field has raised the school's position to enviable heights. The higher secondary education in Thrissur district is at present sweating hard to keep abreast of the Vivekodayam education. The strict discipline and impetus in learning we impart here is unparalleled.
Education @ Vivekodayam
Adhering to the present trends, the higher secondary section of Vivekodayam is envisaged as a mixed one. The aim is to promote a healthy co-education system, which is the need of the hour today. The higher secondary section consists of four science batches (one Biology-Mathematics combination). Catering to the varied needs of the students it also has one Commerce batch with Computer Application) and to Humanities (one with Computer Application) batches.
The Unaided Section
We are happy that we could start higher secondary unaided girls' section in the year 2001. This section, at present, has two science streams-one with Biology -Mathematics combination and the other with Biology-Computer Science combination. Here too we are committed to maintain similar standard of teaching, convenience and facilities

Apart from this , the section also contains books touching various spheres of knowledge as well as those which dwell deep into its bifurcated specifications meant for reference and general reading , they are carefully chosen so as to inculcate in the students a thirst for further reading and to place them in the wider visitors of knowledge best assured of these books will enable them to the graver readings demanded of them in the higher levels.

The laboratories of Vivekodayam Higher Secondary School are equipped with the latest paraphernalia. The apparatuses are new, students friendly, accurate and full-fledged. The laboratory hours are arranged in such a manner that each student gets one apparatus at a time to do the experiment. They are also given sufficient time to practice before the commencement of practical examinations. A majestic computer laboratory equipped with Pentium-4processors, Windows NT networking and Internet facility is exemplary of the concern we give to the facilities at large. Decidedly, these laboratories are among the best in the state.
